✞ Advent and the Catholic Church
- Here in this inner city Catholic church there is a lot of footfall but the church is kept open all day. I like the way they have added battery operated church advent candles so that anyone visiting can participate with safety in mind. It also allowed for the wreath to be decorated with large bold floral arrangements and fresh red and white berries as there is no risk of catching fire.

✞ Advent Wreath Candles Compared
Advent in the Catholic Church versus Protestant Practice
- Catholic Advent wreaths use three purple candles and one pink, emphasizing penitence, royalty, and joy with a white Christ candle.
- Protestant Advent wreaths often use a similar color scheme but may substitute blue for purple to emphasize hope and anticipation
- Both traditions may include a central white candle for Christmas, representing Christ as the true spiritual light.
- The order of lighting is very similar, but I have noticed all purple and the pink candle being lit on the first of advent , only the Christ candle remaining unlit until christmas. The underlying Christian themes and color meanings are very similar and are intended to all guide worshippers from spiritual preparation and repentance to joy, love, and fulfillment in Christ’s arrival.
- The advent wreath’s evolving light and symbolism provide a spiritual journey reminding everyone that the external ritual is meant to draw the Christian towards reflection as Christmas draws near.
