Kneelers for Church Cushions Fish Symbol Christianity
Among the many small treasures found in churches along my pilgrimage travels few are as quietly beautiful as the church kneeler cushions.
Often overlooked beneath pews or resting before side altars, these humble works of ecclesiastical sewing hold both the mark of the hands that made them and the impression on many a knee that prayed on them. Modern Church Kneeler Cushions History
Too often for my liking are these replaced with plastic stackable pew chairs with the church kneeler cushions ending up being disgraced. Although in recent times the younger generation seems to have discovered needlepoint crafts again , so perhaps recording some of these designs will help keeping them alive.
Whilst many of these parish church kneelers focus on local history, buildings in th locality women’s organisations like the W.I and commemorative memorial designs I am particularly interested in ecclesiastical sewing and needlepoint designs so shall focus on recording them on my pilgrimage travels. From church patron saints, to designs from the book of Kells and Christian symbolism I look forward to collecting these stitched prayer cushions in many a pew to come.
Their colours fade with decades of kneeling, their patterns rubbed smooth but yet they remain steadfast — small, faithful companions in the life of the parish church.
A little about the Origins of Church Kneeler Cushions and Prayer Cushion Pads
The use of kneeling cushions in church dates back to the early modern period, though their origins lie in far older traditions of prostration and prayerful reverence.
In medieval times, floors were often made from local stone or stone clay tiles so kneeling directly upon them was a physical act of humility and perhaps even endurance. By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as parish churches developed pews and enclosed seating type booths often small leather or cloth pew prayer cushions began to appear. These may have been at first purely practical in nature and developed later when women used their ecclisiastical sewing ideas to extend to church kneeler cushions . As they became popular more richly embroidered designs as local memorials. .
The Art and Symbolism of Needlepoint
The beauty of these prayer cushions lies in their combination of artistry and theology or biblical symbols
Each motif — cross, vine, fish, crown, sheaf of wheat, Bible verse stories is drawn from Christian symbol ideas.
Colours are chosen with intention:
• Red for love and sacrifice,
• Gold for divine light,
• Blue for heaven and the Virgin Mary
• Green for growth, renewal and hope.
Some kneelers commemorate local saints , holy wells or particulat church dedications; others weave in heraldry, scripture, or simple geometric forms echoing stained glass.
