Traditional Easter Flower Arrangements for Church
in Northern Hemisphere

Spring Floral Arrangements for Church Flower Decor from my pilgrimage travels in Europe at Pilgrim on HolyGround

I like the way this floral arrangement echoes the wooden altar cross

the white flecked foliage sets of the spring daisies, yellow daffodils and I am not sure what the pink spring flowers are. Perhaps they are an artificial stem of pink blossom to show a cherry blossom type effect

 Easter Flower Arrangements for Church
in Southern Hemisphere

Southern Hemisphere Floral Decor in Church Alternatives

  • Because Easter in the Southern Hemisphere falls in autumn, local church flower arrangers often might find creative ways to reflect resurrection within harvest tones rather than spring pastels.
  • Protea – Symbol of rebirth and divine strength; native to South Africa, radiant and enduring.
  • Banksia / Grevillea – Textured blooms echoing the crown of thorns transformed into beauty.
  • White roses or lilies – universal resurrection symbolic flowers
  • Eucalyptus pods and foliage, the wonderful green hues of different type of eycalyptus are a little bit similar in their foliage use then the European ivy greenery, signifying steadfast faith
  • Golden wattle or southern hemisphere Easter autumn foliage

Colour Symbolism for Church floral arrangements

White:

  • White is often chosen as the main colour for Easter.
  • the biblical event of the resurrection at Easter has the angels who meet Mary Magdalene at the tomb described as being “clothed in a long white garment” or sometimes translated as  “clothing white as snow” (Mark 16:5; Matthew 28:3).
  • white can be seen to represent spiritual truth, purity, genuine wisdom.
  • as a bible colour it symbolizes  innocence, joy brought by the Lord’s rising at Easter time

Gold/Yellow:

  • Gold and yellow are often used as accents colours representing spiritual and divine light
  • yellow or a paler yellow/orange is often mixed with splashes of white during Easter. They symbolize the  highest, most pure holy love with white containing all other colours within it.

Green:

  • Green often acts as a support colour, a balancing of sorts, , with the biblical flower symbolism of hope, renewal, and new growth. It represents the stability and grounding nature of holding the white light

Liturgical Easter Flower Arrangements Church versus Secular Generic Spring Flower Arrangements

Typical Easter Flowers in Church Settings

  • Daffodils: Hope, rebirth, new beginnings
  • Tulips: Love and renewal
  • Hyacinths: Peace and constancy
  • The most iconic Easter flower is the Easter lily. The white lily is universally recognized as a symbol of Easter because of its pure white color, white containing within itself all the other colour, a pure oneness God colour for me. The lilies trumpet shapes seen by some flower arrangers as to be signifying the proclamation of the Lord's resurrection combined with alerting everyones attention with its sweet fragrance. The Easter lily of course also represents the Virgin Mary.
  • Purpose proclamation of resurrection
  • Palette White, gold, and light green (liturgical colours of resurrection)
  • Palette Pinks, pastels, and bright tone
  • Focus when theological — life emerging from death, growth after cold dormancy , winter ( interesting how these symbols will be reversed when viewed from the southern hemisphere perspective. )
  • Placement of Easter flowers in church on Altar, sacred font, on pedastal forms with Paschal candle, to decorate church stained glass windows creating a spring hisotiral trail telling bible stories in stained glass
  • Invite and usher in near the cross at church door entryways in the alcoves of church stained glass windows
  • Create a contemplative prayer mood with candlelight
