I am sure more knowledgable embroiders and biblical scholars have perhaps better interpretations of these designs, but I am interested in what they make me feel, what I see and perhaps what surprises me on my pilgrimages. Being quiet, engaging in contemplative prayer and watching out  to what God draws my attention too is very much part of my approach to journeying though pilgrimage churches.

- Detailed -

• This is a very busy design stitched onto a biblical landscape scene type background with lots of figurative details added from the scripture of Noqn building his ark, the animals arriving two by two . I like the way on the left hand side the arriving or perhaps receding flood water can be seen where on the right is dry land with Noah and his family being depicted. 2 giraffes, an elephant, a monkey, various birds, sheep and fish can all be spotted On the is church kneeler cushion. A simple yellow corded rope is added around the edges and it is softly stuffed and hung up at the back pew with a d ring attachment.

• Noahs ark church kneelers cushion hassock design with a stylised rainbow, waves of water indicating the flood and an abstract trinity triangle descending of rain over the ark. The flood and the peace white dove from biblical scripture scene

• This is a busy scene stitched with quite a loose embroidery style, blending different weights of tapestry threads to give an organic feel to the biblical landscape scene. Water and sky are separated and Noah’s ark is in the flood with a few animals in a cartoon like style being depicted. On the left hand side the white dove with an olive branc in her beak can be seen approaching Noah and the ark to signal that dry land is in sight after the flood waters receded.

- Simple - 

• This is a simpler framed style design just featuring a minimal stylised outline of Noahs ark floating on water. There are not other identifying details other than a rectangular frame stitched for emphasis. It is attached by a d-hook and smaller that average in size compared to the one you can see in the above photo, perhaps desiged as a prayer hassock for a child. 

• This church kneelers cushion Noah’s ark reminded me a bit of patchwork, with the tapestry embroidered in shapes that resemble fabric. A simple geometric outline indicates the ark boat shape and a house the living quarters for Noah and his family. An abstracted rainbow shape is stitched in an ombré ray above the center motif. There are no animals or figures depicted on this hassock design.

• Here I am featuring Noahs Ark hassock, prayer and church kneeler cushion designs. Inspired by traditional biblical scenes featuring the flood, water , Noah himself and various animal arriving two by two. Needlepoint and embroidery ecclesiastical crafts with bible scenes pictured on hassocks, kneeler cushions and prayer seating that I spot on my parish pilgrimage journeys. Feel free to add some of your own that share your local story .
• I have seen some people mention that " pre designed cross kits" are boring, or not interesting enough to feature. However for me it is more interesting what sense I get of people choosing to use biblical cross symbols for their devotional practice , often the simpler the more to the point, rather than whether is rare or hand-design. To me each stitch added in prayer will carry God's love for each subsequent knee that finds itself supported by it.

• Simple shape of a large boat/ark, rounded base, animal pairs visible (heads peeking out: elephant, dove, lion, sheep, birds, giraffe).
• Dove with olive branch in its beak above the ark
• A rainbow arching over the ark stitched in ombré colours as a symbol of God’s promise
• Waves or water motifs below the ark, with a little land seen on the edges suggesting change and promised safety above the floods.
• Sun rising in the background, for hope and new beginnings.
• Tiny sprouting plant or olive branch near the ark, echoing the renewal of the earth.
• Short phrase stitched in lettering or cross stitch around the edges of the hassock kneeler cushion, e.g.: "Safe in God’s Care" or "Covenant of Peace."
• Depending on embroidery skill level you can use simple stylised shapes, clear lines, or experiment with textured thread and a more loose patchwork effect

• What are the cushions is church called in your denomination? 

There seem to be different names used for the church kneeler cushions that are in the congregations pew used to kneel on, to sit on for warmth oil the pew bench and the different church kneelers used by the clergy

• church kneelers, parish kneelers, simply kneelers, prayer cushion, hassock cushion , hassocks have all been put forward by the congregations of various pilgrimage churches I visited as names commonly used. Some use the name kneeler cushion when they are removable , can be hung up at the back of the pew and are generally portable. Hassock or hassocks cushions is an older term which generally seems to point more are those types that can be lowered from a hinge at the back of a pew and are covered with a leather or leather-like fabric that is padded to protect the knees when praying. 
• other names are thought to be genuflectorium , genuflexorium although I have not been able to find any historical evidence for these words, yet ! I will keep researching.
• Some people , especially embroidery guilds and local women’s institute members , often specialise in recording commemorative and locally inspired designs for their hassocks. I am however looking forward to particularly discovering on my pilgrimages biblical symbols and bible motifs used for prayer reflections as well as contemplative church designs.
