Church Kneeler Cushions Holy Spirit Dove, Parish Hassocks found on my Pilgrimage Journey , I am collecting them into a themed Archive of Ecclesiastical Sewing with Embroidery and Needlepoint Designs
- This is a very simple stylised design of an art of the Holy Spirit dove with a plain single line halo around its head. It is stitched in silhouette with 2 wings showing but no other detailing added .
- The embroidery thread is a plain white stitched on a medium blue , a kind of sky blue background. The same design must have been used by several stitchers, perhaps it came in an embroidery kit form. Below you can see an example of the same design but on a burgundy maroon red background canvas.

~ Fine detailed ~
- Here is a very fine hight stitch count design that beautifully shows off the stitched detailed of the foliage ring around the flying Holy Spirit dove. There is fine feather detailing in both wings but no halo is added to the Holy Spirit here. Perhaps it represents a peace dove with the ivy leaf foliage but no indication of an olive leaf or olive branch is found. a simple red outer line frames the design into the rectangular form of the kneeling cushion.
- This is an interesting stylised art of the Holy Spirit dove design. Here the dove is stitched holding an olive branch. There are two Holy Spirit doves , perhaps representing peace for different people on opposing ends of the unifying anchor. there can also be seen 2 christian fish symbols swimming towards each other , or towards the anchor symbol. the Holy Spirit dove is carrying an olive branch in the beak.
- This is an interesting church kneeler design which looks to me like a commemorative wedding design stitched onto an ecru rustic linen coloured background with a floral border, wedding pales, 3 sets of numbers which I presume indicate dates although I am not quite sure what year or years they represent. a pair of peace doves can be seen holding a set of wedding rings. There are also 3 sets ( Trinity perhaps) of wedding bells with a floral heart decoration. The edging is stitched in small 4 petal flower design.

How to do Bible Study Journaling with Church Kneelers
How to do bible Study Journaling when finding Church Kneelers with Bible Motifs on Pilgrimage
- When I come across a bible symbol, motif or biblical scene I don't immediately recognise then I use that as an opportunity for a little impromptu bible study on the road
- I take a photo of the church kneeler pattern and often I carry a simple instant black and white camera with me that prints out a little receipt like picture that I can immediately stick into my bible journal
- I make a note of the motif parts I can identify and perhaps a little sketch of the one I can't. This helps to jog my memory later. Often by drawing a symbol I look closer at the design and might spot something I hadn't noticed at first glance
- If the church kneeler cushion is specific to a particular location, like it shows a patron saint, or a local church emblem or a specific christian healing well etc I try and locate some information in the church history folders often displayed at the entrance to a pilgrimage church, sometimes near their prayer request table or on the noticeboard wall. If it is a more popular pilgrimage destination there is sometimes a little local guidebook available that might have some collage material that could be added to my bible journaling page
- If there is no-one to ask inside the church then I try and google the symbol to learn more when I get back to internet access

- Who is the the Holy Spirit ? or perhaps What is the Holy Spirit ?
- Collage the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
- Make a list of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit
- Find some art of the Holy Spirit ( there are some beautiful ones in my church stained glass art collection) and add them to your bible journaling page. Observe how different artist chose to stylise the elements of the peace dove versus the Holy Spirit dove
- Add your favourite prayer to the Holy Spirit
- Find some Holy Spirit dove clip art you like and if you are doing a digital blog or bible journal; add it to your page. I like using woodnotes and a bible journal marked with the books of the bible so I can mix and match
- For a contemplative prayer section perhaps add some personal words to the Holy Spirit that have come to mind when contemplating the different art of the Holy Spirit you used to collage, or the way the church stained glass windows have made you feel when the rays of the dove descend on Mary in the annunciation . Let yourself be drawn to what feels right in the moment
- As always these are just sharing and suggestions of the methods and prompts I use in my own personal bible sty when on the pilgrim's way
- Perhaps I will design a little bible journaling printable that might be fun to use. Personally I tend to gravitate to a traveler's journal; as I enjoy the way I can take pages and whole journals out, add a ziplock pocket to store my clipart and change the order of the inserts as I travel to different pilgrim destinations. I don't necessarily travel in a straight line from one point to the next but rather linger in a place to experience all those prayerful feet that have walked it before. I often return to favourite destinations before I move on. there is always a sense of when it is right to embrace the next pilgrimage church
