On my pilgrimage travels I get to see many beautiful floral church decor and I thought it might be interesting for other people around the world to see how European and English church floral rota volunteers choose to decorate the pedestal, altar and other seasonal flower arrangements for church . Here I will focus particularly on fall and autumnal colour schemes, thanksgiving and harvest festival decor as well as fall season biblical flower symbolism
Fall Floral Arrangements for Church
- Church Flower Arrangement Location: Parish Church Sanctuary Arrangement on. Wooden pedestal
- Flower types used :
Golden Pincushion Protea (Leucospermum cordifolium) — intricate, spiked forms evoking divine beauty , almost like little rays of light circling around the center sphere , these were a kind of pale golden yellow but I believe they come in vibrant orange autumnal fall shades too. This is an evergreen shrub. - Green Chrysanthemum “Kermit” Balls —like Pom Pom shaped balls, bright vibrant little green floral spheres thought to symbolize renewal
- Physalis Lanterns (Physalis alkekengi) — these are always so mysterious looking, like they are not really a flower , but delicate seed pods glowing like tiny altars; symbolic meaning can be the mystery of resurrection and hidden life.
- Pinecones — ancient signs of life held in dormancy, symbolically can mean patience and quiet promise of the seed of things to come
- •Golden Berries (could be wither from Ilex or perhaps Pyracantha) — bright joy
- Cinnamon Sticks — fragrant, warming, reminiscent of prayer rising like incense.
- Laurel — laurel for perseverance and victory
- Ivy leaves foliage trailing , symbolically can stand for faithfulness and eternal life

Fall Floral Arrangements for Church
- front view of the font with its wooden cover suspended above. a pumpkin on a type of bold ivy leaf is wrapped around the inner church font bowl, I like the ornate carvings on the stone exterior, I wonder if it is made from a local stone? I will check when I am next visiting this church on one of my pilgrimages.

- Flower types used :
- Yellow Pincushion Protea (Leucospermum ) — This is an evergreen shrub and only a few are sprinkled in here
- Red apples : added for a harvest festival feel with an orange pumpkin being displayed on top of the foliage on the font. This is located at the entrance of the church and offers an immediately inviting focal point.
- Poppy seed heads : these are always very striking adding some neutral colour tones to a red/green colour scheme. Here the vivid red of the apples that are shine is set off nicely with the matte of the poppy seed head. Symbolically seedbeds stand for renewal. In biblical symbolism red poppies stand for remembrance, sacrifice, and resurrection, primarily through its association with the blood of Christ
- Pumpkin : an orange pumpkin is placed on top of the font, nestling in a bed of ivy leaves. This church was preparing their thanksgiving and harvest festival events and these were the first floral decor ideas. I did not take a picture but the alcoves with the stained glass window each had a little mini pumpkin with a foliage bouquet in front marking it as little signposts for a stained glass window history trail. The Sunday school children's group had also made paper stained glass windows that depicted the actual biblical scenes around the chapel.
- Hops : small scattered stalks of hops flowers and hops seed heads are on the floor, are they meant to be there or were they getting ready for adding them to a different display ?

- I just noticed the red and black chequered tiles on this church floor, almost like a harlequin type patterned.

- I had fun designing some black and white bible clipart with a floral arrangement church theme. I might add some font flowers, a pedestal arrangements and christian flower vases for church newsletters and different christian festival flyers
