Among the sacred trees mentioned in the bible the Olive features in both the old testament and the new testament scripture. for my Olive bible study I am lookinh at the Olive meaning in scripture. The development of Christian olive oil symbolism from traditional anointing oil to modern uses in church. To understand hebrew scripture mentioning a look at the biblical olive oil press and sharing my pilgrimage pictures to an olive grove.

• Olive tree symbolism includes endurance, renewal, and steadfast faith, spiritual growth over time

✣ On Pilgrimage to Saint Frideswide Shrine at the Christ Church cathedral in Oxford and I got to see a beautifully old specimen of a sacred olive tree . . It was at the center of a prayer bible garden with a small fountain type silent pool with scripture blessings engraved on it 

✣ Healing Olive Tree in the Bible Garden and a small prayerful walkway around the olive tree with places to pause for contemplative prayer when it is not so crowded with tourists.

✣ I was blessed to be able to enter with my pilgrims passport and got a slot where the cathedral was on a quiet break. The season was just right for the olive leaves to have started to drop so I was able to pick a few sacred leaves from the church floor for my sketchbook collage.

• Ancient harvesting methods: hand-picking, beating branches to collect, using biblical olive oil press utilising grinding stones and a wheel

✣ COMMON WILD OLIVE VERSUS SACRED OLIVE PLANT

• Common/wild olive:
• Hebrew: זֵית שָׂדֶה (zayit sadeh), 
• Greek: ἀγριέλαιος (agrielaios).
• Often tougher, less fruit, sometimes bitter; used symbolically for distant peoples, or those not yet spiritually fertile.
  
  
• Sacred/cultivated olive:
• Hebrew: זֵית טוֹב (zayit tov), 
• Greek: ἐλαία (elaia).
• Cared for, fruitful, used for anointing
• symbolizes those in communion with the Lord.

✣ WHY OLIVE OIL WAS SACRED

• Sacred for ritual: Only olive oil was prescribed for lighting the menorah, offerings, and anointing kings, priests, and prophets.
• Used for welcoming, healing, and even for taking oaths and dedications.
• Messiah/Christ: Both Hebrew משיח (Mashiakh) and Greek Χριστός (Christos) = “Anointed One.”
• Symbol of abundance and Divine favor: “A land of oil olive and honey” meant the fullness of God’s care.
