What does advent mean ? 

Advent is a special season in the Christian festal calendar that celebrates the anticipation and preparation for the coming of Jesus, both at His birth as baby Jesus known as the reason for the season of Christmas 

Advent comes from a latin word " Adventus"  that means “coming” or “arrival.” 

In Christianity Advent is the season when Christians prepare their hearts and minds for the birth of Jesus.  Jesus birth or His name in Hebrew is pronounced Jeshua , is celebrated at Christmas

Historically speaking here are some Advent Definitions from my advent bible study research 

• ..." The word Advent comes from the Latin and means the coming, and well, for it tells of the time set apart by the church to prepare for the coming of our Lord.  We know not when Advent was established.  It goes back till its history is lost in the silence of the Apostolic times. Some writers say* that it was instituted by St. Peter himself, others by Pope Gregory the Great. It appears to have been celebrated in Eome from the beginning of the Church. As the Jews were taught by John Baptist in the desert, " Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight His paths," "preaching the baptism of penance unto the remission of sins, thus Advent is to prepare the world for his coming at Christmas. ... " according to Meagher
• The Fourth Sunday of Advent The time leading up to the actual Christmas Day, the birth day of Jesus, are referred to as Advent. In the Christian festival calendar this time is celebrated as a season of hope, reflection, and a sense of preparedness or maybe readiness for Jesus arrival .

" ... The people first kept an Advent of forty days, till in after years they shortened it to four weeks. Thus, we read of its being kept in England, in Italy, in Germany, Spain, etc. The first official act of a Pope shortening Advent to four weeks is found in the letters of Nicholas I.  Although St. Peter of Damien and St. Louis of France, in after years, kept it for forty days, they did it only through devotion. .. What does advent mean in 4 and 5 candle wreath ?

• ..." Advent began in the western church, for it appears that the time of holding it was laid down only after Christmas was fixed for the 25th of December. That it was held in the church from the earliest ages all monuments of antiquity teach. In the fifth century it was customary to assemble the people, and by sermons and services prepare them for Christmas, as can be seen by the sermons of SS., Maxim of Toul, Ambrose of Milan, Augustin of Hippo, and Caesar of Arls, besides of many of the early saints, while the bishops of the Carlovingian kingdom told Charles the Bald that he must not take the people from the churches during the time of Advent or Lent, under the excuse of State matters or the necessity of war.
  St. Gregory of Tours says that S. Perpetuus, one of his predecessors, ordered that the faithful of his diocese should fast three times a week, from St. Martin's day till Christmas.... "  according to Meagher

What are advent candles ? 

What are advent candles

• There are no direct references to "Advent candles" in the Bible but references to Jesus being “ The light of the World “ and Lightbringer have been used to crete a symbolic lighting of candle in the advent period
•  Variations can be advent candle wreath with 4 candles , denoting 4 weeks before Christmas 
• Sometimes a 5th candle is introduced on Christmas Day to reflect Christ as the Light of the world Himself
• In German christian tradition he 4 advent candles are lit  leading up to Christmas Day. Each is litfor a little contemplative prayer time on each Sunday until Christmas in turn. On the first advent Sunday before Christmas a single candle representing hope is lit. Care is taken only to let it burn a little while during advent prayer as it will be lit again on each subsequent advent Sunday .

• " ... The Franco-Roman Missal gives a Latin hymn, composed in the eleventh century, relating to the birth of Christ, while the Ambrosial Missal has a special prayer for the second Sunday of Advent. The same may be seen in the hymn book of Tomasi, and in the Mozarabic Missal with its beautiful hymns and prayers, in the Gallican Missal with its sweetly sounding collects, in the Gallican Sacramentary with its prayers for Christmas, in the Anthology of the Greeks with its beautiful hymns, in the Ambrosian Liturgy with the prayers for the weeks of Advent, in the Mozarabic Breviary with its offices of Advent, in Cluny's Missal with its hymns to the Virgin, in the hymns and the prayers composed by Peter of Damien, in all the monuments of these ancient times, in these books of Liturgy, old and venerable, we find the Offices and the Masses of Advent to be preparations for the coming of our Lord in the holidays of Christmas. ... " according to Meagher 

• In summary the tradition of using Advent candles developed later in Christian history, is not part of a biblical instruction but developed as part of Christianity in church folk tradition, rather than as a biblical commandment or practice. The Bible itself does not mention Advent wreaths or the specific lighting of candles for the weeks leading up to Christmas But Christ a the Light of the World is represented by candlelight in Christian celebrations.
