Church Colours for Advent On my pilgrimage travels I get to see many beautiful floral church decor and I thought it might be interesting for other people around the world to see how European and English church floral rota volunteers choose to decorate the pedestal, lectern and altar with seasonal flower arrangements for church . Here I will focus particularly on advent wreath candles , their colour variations, what does advent mean in red versus purple and foliage florals for biblical flower symbolism

• There are a wide variety of different traditions for decorating church colours for advent wreath and floral arrangements. 
• This lectern in a pilgrimage church had a cool colour purple and turquoise theme, with the advent wreath candles in purple for the 4 main candles and traditional white for the center christcandle. 
• The advent candle with cross is the last to be lit, the other 4 on each subsequent advent sunday. Here for the first advent would be purple, as well as the second advent and the 3rd , 4th advent candle in purple. The 5th and final is a white Christ candle.

• symbolically representing joy, encouragement, the kind of hope that lifts the anticipating spirit
• a rejoicing in the knowledge that the arrival of the Lord is near

• Three purple advent wreath candles , with the colour purple symbolising for for penance, preparation and royalty 
  
• One pink/rose coloured advent wreath candle symbolizing joy and rejoicing . The pink advent candle is traditionally being lit on the third Sunday, also known as Gaudete Sunday
• A white advent wreath candle is placed as a central focus point in the middle , sometimes this candle is larger in circumference and extends higher above all the other advent candles . This is known as the Christ candle signifying Christ’s arrival and the reason for the season in the catholic church calendar

• Purple: Traditionally points to repentance, noble preparation, and dignity; spiritually, it hints at the effort and humility needed for inner change and reception of higher truth.
• Blue: A modern adaptation in some traditions, it represents anticipation, eternity, and faith mirroring the sky before dawn and the soul’s openness to a new spiritual beginning.
• Pink/Rose: Denotes rejoicing and a lighter, joy-filled spirit midway through Advent; also aligns with moments of spiritual confirmation and delight as enlightenment dawns.
• White: Purity, clarity, and fullness of spiritual truth used to signify the presence of Divine light when the Christ candle is lit.

In this little parish country church effective use is make of the baptismal font which has an wooden oak lid. The view leads straight down the pews toward the stained glass window over the main altar. 

Long thin stemmed advent wreath candles in a set of 4 red and one white christ candle in the center have been placed with a complimentary white and red poinsettia flower focal point. Dark green trailing ivy leaves are wrapped around , weaving in and around the advent candles in a circle. 

I like the way the simple floral arrangement for church advent compliments the simple interior inviting the congregating and of course any visiting pilgrim to pause right at the beginning for a moment of contemplative prayer before approaching the rest of the church

• Second Sunday: Bethlehem Candle (Faith, purple)
• Third Sunday: Shepherd’s Candle (Joy, pink/rose)
