Nativity Scene with Barn , Stable , Manger

Joseph Mary and Baby Jesus in traditional manger barn stable scenes, with animal , sheep, cows, sometimes camels, a rustic setting in Bethlehem where there was no room at the inn but the holy family had to seek shelter in what is believed to be a type of barn, sometimes in older bibles translated as cave. In any case it was a makeshift setting for the arrival of the Lord Jesus Christ from the womb of the Virgin Mary. Joseph had to provide warmth and shelter as well as a guiding light to facilitate the imminent birth of baby Jesus . Often the star of bethlehem and holy spirit light ray can be seen in church stained glass windows placed so the sun light at certain times of the day illuminates the whole scene. I will share some of my favourites to use for comparison bible study with christian art and visio divina. 

• It is interesting to see Mother Mary rendered with bright blond falling hair locks, no head scarf or covering of any kind, just a white shining halo. She is wearing a white tunic type dress, a blue cloack with a little bright crimson red peeking through from either a coverlet or a dress tunic close to baby Jesus who is wrapped in swaddling cloth
• Saint Joseph is wearing a dark emerald green cloak and a lighter emerald green tunic. This rendition reminds me a little of the famous Holman Hunt painting showing Jesus as holding a lamp 

• I love the way the animals are rendered here, the 2 cows leaning agains the barn stable door , or sitting in front of it munching away a little hay stra watching the scene unfolding before them. The shepherd in the background who has been alerted by the angel as to the arrival of the Saviour is carrying a small lamb over his shoulder. 
• Saint Joseph is holding a beautifully drawn lantern light, it looks like a kind of metal forged with holes in it tht have a trinity foliate leaf symbol on them for the light to shine.

Mary and Baby Jesus 

• I loved the colour palette on these nativity stained glass windows, a royal blue tone for mother mary's cloak with both Joseph and her having matching red halos. Baby jesus is sitting on her lap with a golden yellow white halo shining forth. In the distance some trees make out a rural landscape type setting , not much of a manger or barn stable is visible. There is a woven type manger basket with some fresh straw or hay in it next to Mary and in the background is some dark emerald green foliage with some white lily flower blooms interspersed. There is an ornate frame with wildlfloers woven around the church stained glass window alcove . Joseph is holding a staff and wearing a white cloak with a gold trim

• a simple nativity church glass window scene with Mary sitting on a makeshift manger bed, which seems to be made of wood filled with clean straw or hay. she is wearing a blue robe and on her lap is a red cloth blanket on which she rests baby Jesus as she wraps Him in His swaddling cloth. There are 3 white turtledoves or simple doves looking on to the scene . Both Mary and Jesus Christ are wearing halos in this church stained glass art

• 2 Guardian angels are protecting the space of Mary and the baby Jesus. The light of the holy spirit is descending in strong lights straight through the middle of the angels through Mary and her halo onto the baby Jesus and he is glowing with Christ light. Truly the light of the world being born on this day. When I walk on pilgrimage in the winter month, I rejoice in finding in a decorated church still the reason for the season. 

• Here a closeup of the simple woven or even draped swaddling cloth makeshift basket that rests on a floor of green foliage, white lily flower blooms ( Mary biblical symbol of purity )  by the feet of the two holy angels , which might also be guardina angels in their draped ropes. I like the way marys cloak or robe has an almost watercolour like effect with colours of royal blue, purple and pink blending together to form a effect

Joseph Mary and Baby Jesus 

• This is a very early medieval holy family nativity church stained glass window, well actually it could also have been inserted into a devotional altar. Many years ago I took a photo of stained glass in the Victoria and Albert museum in London, Uk but next time I visit there I will see if it is known whether this belonged to an old medieval church or perhaps a private chapel on a family estate. 
• Saint MAry with a halo and royal blue closed cloak robe and a bright golden yellow halo with thin rays in the circle extending outwards. Baby Jesus is lying on a swaddling cloth which is not wrapped around him, but the holy light is extending underneath and all around him and he also has a golden yellow halo.
