Step by step, more and more leaving the metaphorical biblical sandals behind, all the while practicing the presence of GOD.
Sharing as part of an online bible study for women - is it feasible ?
This is my journey, as I am experiencing life as a pilgrim on holy ground. Are my pilgrimage tips and visual bible study aids useful to others ? I am hoping to find out.
Give me the holy bible you can write in, a prayer journal notebook, compass, backpack and a few bible journaling supplies and I will take you along on a journey with me
What is a Pilgrimage Road in Welsh I wondered - pererindod. This is a relatively new route established by the Bangor diocese, leading to the same destination as the North Wales camino, the island of Bardsey or as it is known in Welsh Ynys Enlli which means " The island of the currents".
The strait between the mainland and Bardsey islands coast is particularly treacherous and many a monk , perhaps even a nun or two is thought to have tested his or her faith trying to traverse it in a coracle. But more on that at a later time when I reach my destination.
Time now for stamping my pilgrims passport at Davy Jones locker, one of the few non-church stops on this trail
I have always been a visual learner seeking tactile experiences and presence of place to find out what is "real" for me.
How to study the bible is a very personal experience, there are so many different styles of learning, from kinaesthetic and auditory to visual.
I started with bible verse journaling, the act of writing it down somehow embodied the meaning in the moment. Carrying a notebook is second nature now but over time I have found that I gravitate towards certain supplies again and again, especially when travelling on a pilgrimage road.
But what does Pilgrimage Road mean ? Or mean to me would be a better way of phrasing it.
The intention is to walk whilst consciously and constantly practicing to face GOD, or as Brother Lawrence puts it in his book " Practicing His presence"
I jotted down the words "continually, establish ourselves & sense" as they all resonated with the way I view the idea of a lifelong pilgrimage road.
Here in this space however , I would like to particularly focus on recording and visually responding to the holy places I travel to, the church stained glass windows depicting bible stories I encounter and find myself in personal dialogue with. Some speak to me, others don't, or maybe not today.
The pilgrim on HolyGround for me is an archetype, a choice and intention to be present, present to GOD.
The challenge lies in the noticing, the transforming of oneself away from self and more and more, every moment, every situation, every chance I get to become aware of which direction I am facing. The first step is awareness, the second gratitude, the third " press repeat"
A way of simply being, an intentional pause to focus inward and connect for first and foremost with GOD. After that and from that centre many prayer types are available to try out until one is found that seems to be the perfect fit for the time being. Another word for contemplative is reflective , meditative rumination. I like that, digging deeper, turning ideas, feelings, impressions around until they feel true to me.
But what is a contemplative prayer life though, if not just a simple daily bible scripture of the day paired with a prayer asking, thanking or forgiving? To me its an attempt to be unceasing , pray without ceasing which means turning toward GOD first in all instances of daily life, not just a special time set aside away from the noise of interruption. The goal is to be especially present right in the middle of the daily chaos. Barely ever achieved but my firm intention is set to be chasing that goal with all my heart.
This is a little idea of my online bible study for women plan which I am sure will evolve as I move along this pilgrimage road. For now it serves as a reminder of what lies ahead , which parts have been walked and recorded and where I am hoping to head. GOD willing !
